Walked from Nuneaton to Atherstone on a fine spring day. A very enjoyable walk mostly by the canal. The towpath surface varies and there can be muddy sections.

Leaving the meeting point in Nuneaton, we go a short distance west along Queens Road, then right onto Harefield Street and left onto Newdegate Street. We follow this and Abbey Street over Jubilee Way and on to Central Avenue/Midland Road, which we cross using a pelican crossing and turn left. When we reach the canal we turn right down a ramped path onto the towpath, which is surfaced at this point. We then follow the towpath, which remains on the right/north side of the canal all the way into Atherstone. There is a pub/restaurant (The Anchor Inn) about halfway.

The exit right onto Coleshill Street is just beyond the canal bridge. We follow Coleshill Street, crossing South Street with care (or using the zebra crossing further left) then past the post office to Long Street, where we cross, turn left then right up Market Street to reach the Atherstone meeting point in the Market Place.

A lovely wander along the canal - the other reviews have covered the detail I think! Direct train between the two places so you can return to your car easily at the other end!.

I walked this SlowWay last weekend. I started in Nuneaton and headed north-west out of the town centre towards the canal. Once on the Coventry Canal it's a straight, and easy to navigate, route towards Atherstone. On the way there's a few canal marinas, evidence of quarrying, an information board suggesting the site of Boudica's last battle, and nice canalside pub conveniently located around the half-way point. Once at Atherstone it's a short walk from the canal to the town centre, and the walk's end point. A peaceful and relaxing SlowWays route.

A really relaxing Slow Way that's easy to follow. I started the route in Nuneaton. The route takes you round the shopping precinct and past the statue of George Eliot (a local hero, there's a hotel named after her too). The stops and shops hold some gems and as a new visitor to Nuneaton I really hadn't expected to see quite so many specialist supermarkets including African, Greek and Nepali. The route to the canal is by pavement along some main roads, there are plenty of crossings and it's not long before you are on the Coventry Canal. The canal itself takes you into the Warwickshire countryside and you can see across the valley. An intriguing element is how the industrial past still lingers from the days when this canal was busy with quarries. Having passed the suggested site of the Battle of Watling Street (AD60) you soon find yourself on the outskirts of Atherstone. The route from canal to meeting point is direct but safe and Atherstone has its own array of stops and shops for you to peruse. Direct, safe, easy to follow and I forgot to mention there is a pub about half way. A superb Slow Way. Full marks!.
