Description
This route follows the reviewer Malcolm Boura’s suggestion of taking the path behind the houses on Green Road, to Atlow and then onto Carsington Water and Wirksworth.
It avoids blocked footpaths and the dangerous southern part of the B5035, which does not have verges for most of the Ashwir One route

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

01 Feb 2022I cannot recommend this route because it uses the same section of the B5035 east of Hopton. This road is busy with fast moving lorries and cars it has no pavement and very narrow verges. It clearly is walked and is a very useful but sadly unsafe link. The walk from Ashbourne along the Henmore Brook is very pleasant although this is a country walk with mud and cattle. A seat around a tree at Highfields Farm Atlow offers a rest on route to Hognaston where there is an Inn. I found the path alongside Carsington Water tedious and it will be busy on a good summer day, facilities at the main centre just off the route. I don't see any benefit in the detour to Carsington village as the road walk through Hopton has no pavement so stay on the waterside path. The approach to Wirksworth is also very pleasant just a shame the link is so risky.

02 Feb 2022Thanks for looking Ken. I wasn’t sure about this route but I couldn’t find a satisfactory alternative for the Southern end of Carsington Water. Hopefully someone else will!

18 Mar 2022Thank you Lynn for following up on the suggestion.
There is no short route around southern side of Carsington Water but there is a slightly longer route available. From Atlow west to Biggin, the paths were good when I last walked them a year or two ago. Then north to Kirk Ireton and on to Wirksworth, paths that I have not walked. There are many choices and compromises between roads and paths which needs looking at on the ground.
A northern alternative is to continue a bit further around Carsington Water and just round the NE corner there is a footpath heading SE. At Stainsbro' Lane turn left and take the path opposite Stainsborough Hall into Wirksworth. I walked that last year and it was a good route but an annoying dog leg to start with. It adds surprisingly little distance, a little over half a km.
Ashwir 2 - 10.4km
Kirk Ireton - 10.9
Stainsborough Hall - 11.0km

18 Mar 2022I've agonised over this for a while. The dog leg east of Hopton at the head of Carsington is also a steep climb just to go back down. There is a private path to Stainsborough Hall shame we can't use that. So I've gone for Ashwir-3 via Kirk Ireton and wait for the powers that be to offer us a safe pavement on that short section of busy road.
