Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

13 Sep 2021I found the second part of this route (from Alton Grange to Coalville) pleasant, easy and fairly direct - I would recommend that part.
The route from the start to Corkscrew Lane is also fine - all along pavements.
However, the route from Corkscrew Lane to the lakes labelled as 'Daisy Plantation' on the map is very poor! This is a diversion to avoid the grassy roadside verges of Alton Hill, but the 'purple line' in some places does not correspond to actual footpaths, and the footpaths that are there are not well maintained (long grass, damp on the September day that I followed the trail). Overall, on the way back to Ashby I was much happier to walk along the Alton Hill verge!
The following issues need to be addressed:
1) The diversion up Corkscrew Lane adds significantly to the length of the walk, and is not very pleasant walking - it is mostly along car-width tracks through longish grass. It is quieter than the road, though!
2) The exit from Corkscrew Lane is not where the purple line is on the map. There are a couple of places in that stretch where we can enter the wood, though, and there are tracks through the wood, which roughly follow the purple line. I eventually navigated through this and found myself walking beside the Alton Hill road, just the other side of a tall hedge. I would recommend you look at a map before walking this section.
3) The purple line crosses the Alton Hill road at a point where there are 'beware pipeline' markings on both sides of the road. There is no proper hole in the hedge on the north side of the road here! The sensible exit seems to be a gate that can be climbed, a little further up the road towards Ashby. Then walk down the road to get back to the pipeline warning signs, where there is another fence on the south side that can be climbed to get away from the road.
4) The purple line then follows a wide path southwards, before turning left into the woods. But there is no path going into the woods anywhere near there! And the woods are too dense to walk through. I eventually decided to go back to the fence, and follow a path on the south side of the hedge beside the road. The path eventually curves round to the right towards the ponds labelled 'Daisy Plantation' on the map. Here there are multiple paths to choose from, but skirting the first pond clockwise takes us back to the 'purple line'. From there the route is fine, though the first few stiles on the way to Alton Grange need a bit of care, as there are boards over water that are partly hidden in the undergrowth!.

17 Sep 2021One more minor issue with the .gpx file: at the start of the west-to-east stretch between The Altons and Ashby Road, the .gpx file route points straight across a field, where there is no footpath. The actual footpath (well-established) can be found a short distance further on, at the bottom of the field.

19 Oct 2022An unfortunate experiance thanks for the review. It is a sad fact that land shown on the map as access land is not guaranteed to have access as made clear in the attempt to use access land on this Slow Way.

06 Nov 2022An available route has now been uploaded and reviewed. It uses some cross field paths that are public footpaths but may not be visible on the ground. Follow the plot and you can't go wrong. See Ashcoa-2
