Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Caught bus from Newton Abbot (hourly) to Ashburton. Walk starts on pavements walking NE out of town. Pavements narrow in places and require crossing road in several places – not really suitable for wheelchairs, especially with parked cars. Route turns east and crosses A38 on bridge, where there is no pavement and overgrown verges. The middle section of the route is mainly on narrow country lanes. 2.5 miles from Ashburton, there is a lane and bridle path route from Crosspark to Wotton Cross that would make a good alternative route unless you wish to stop at the Rising Sun pub. Pub is in the middle of nowhere and has restricted hours (phone to check on 01364 652533). Official route turns left after pub – this is very narrow (I would not have liked to come across any horses on the bridle path as too narrow to pass safely) and then became waterlogged with over the knee mud. At this point I returned to road and walked SE to cross-roads, then turned left to Lower Wotton where the bridle path rejoins the lane. Route continues on lanes to Chercombe Bridge, where it joins the much used pathway along the River Lemon to the town centre. A couple of kissing gates makes this route difficult for buggies and impossible for wheelchairs.
