Description

I have shortened and simplified the route into Gretna. Also, unfortunately, I have also had to revert to following the road between Eastriggs and Rigg, as Sarah and her pioneer team found the original to be inaccessible

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

We walked this route in July with mostly fair weather.
The first section of this route out of Annan is very easy to follow, with quiet lanes and joins a lovely footpath along the Merse beach. It cuts inland before heading through Eastriggs. Due to a previous footpath bypass being closed, the route now takes you along the B721 towards Rigg which isn’t particularly pleasant. It’s a very fast road and requires careful attention for the traffic. The route after Rigg and the final stretch into Gretna is quieter and along easy pavemented roads.

This route has a lovely first section alongside the river, with sweeping views. Unfortunately after that it requires you to walk along the B721 between Eastriggs and Rigg, which we found to be busy and not pleasant to walk along. After Rigg, it moves onto quieter country lanes that lead into Gretna.

We walked this route on a sunny day in July.

The route out of Annan is easy to follow and quickly reaches quiet lanes before joining the lovely footpath along the Merse beach. This then cuts inland before heading through Eastriggs. Sadly a previous footpath bypass has been closed and now it is necessary to walk along the B721 between Eastriggs and Rigg. The road is reasonably fast and not very pleasant to walk along, however the route after Rigg is nicer, along a quieter lane.

The final stretch into Gretna is along easy pavemented roads.
