27 Dec 2024I walked from Hemel to Amersham on a misty winter's day.
You have to loop around Hemel station as the back entrance is closed, but you are soon off the road and onto Roughdown Common going uphill. Then it's tracks and paths all the way with the occasional short road section. Most roads are very quiet, but one 40m part needs care. The route is signed most of the way, Chiltern Way, Chiltern Heritage Way, Chess Valley Walk and other unnamed signs. Some parts muddy, some parts narrow, steps and a variety of gates and kissing gates. Not for wheels. There was a sign at Cowcroft farm saying the footpath was closed due to flooding, but I saw no evidence of it. Bovingdon has shops and pubs (The Bell and The Bull) and there is The Crown at Ley Hill. More hills at the Amersham end also.
The mist meant I could not see far but I'm sure there are views.
Open fields, woods and old buildings make this an interesting and varied walk.
