Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is a mostly flat walk from Gerrards Cross to Amersham

It starts near the train station in Gerrards Cross. Come out of the station approach road, turn left and turn immediately left into a small road between two shops and then follow a footpath. The train station will be on your left. You turn walk along pavement through residential roads before having to cross a road. The route then takes you passed Thorpe School before having to cross another road that takes you downhill towards Chalfont St Peter. Turn left onto Lower Road which leads you into the centre of the village. Cross the road and veer left picking up Church Lane. Follow this until it leads you into a footpath beside the allotments and then onto an open space. You then follow the footpath with the the river Misbourne on your right. This footpath is compacted mud with some tree roots and stones sticking out. As you enter Chalfont St Giles, the footpath will run alongside the church graveyard. You then reach the main road, which you have to cross and then go into Stratton Chase Drive which eventually leads onto a footpath (take the right hand fork). Again this is a compacted mud footpath with some tree roots and stones sticking out but easily navigated. When you reach the junction with Mill Lane you have to turn left and walk left for a short time on the road before turning right onto the footpath again. The route is flat across fields again alongside the river Misbourne. You have to cross a road at Bottom House Farm Lane before rejoining the footpath across fields. Eventually this leads you to Old Amersham. You will come out opposite Tesco. Cross the road and walk left along The Broadway and turn right after the Memorial Gardens, passed St Mary’s Church over a small bridge across the river, alongside the cemetery and up the hill to the woods. This is fairly steep although paved. You then enter the woods and follow the footpath to the top. The party through the woods can be muddy with some stones and tree roots. At the top turn right onto the signposted footpath which will take you alongside the railway line for a short distance. When you reach Station Road, cross the road and Amersham station is only a few minutes around the corner.

Safety: This is a safe route although you have to take care crossing roads

Access: this is a mainly flat route. There are no stiles on the route but there are a number of gates

Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles and Amersham all have places where you can stop out but refreshments

If you have a chance to stop in old Amersham, the Memorial Gardens are a wonderful spot to sit with a coffee and enjoy the beautiful views. It’s even better if you can plan your walk to coincide with a band concert or listen to the fantastic St Mary’s Church bell ringers on a Sunday morning.

The first section, downhill to Old Amersham, is very pleasant with great views. Old Amersham itself is very interesting. From there the route mostly follows the South Bucks Way through fields. It goes through Chalfont St Giles (Feathers pub is good for a stop) and then Chalfont St Peter. From there the walking is mostly on roads down to Gerrards Cross.
