02 Feb 2024 Winter

Walked in reverse from Redditch to Alvechurch. A nice, generally easy walk with some hills and a few stiles. Also a horse field with a few temporary electric fences to negotiate. The first part through Redditch is along mostly quiet roads with some interesting Georgian and old mill buildings. Then round a sports field and golf course, through a quiet housing estate, to reach countryside. Lovely Worcestershire rolling fields, if quite muddy. Through a small nature reserve at Rowney Green with buzzard, tree creeper and long tailed tits. Also alpacas! At Alvechurch I went straight on to the station rather than right up to the town centre.

Dont miss the path from the golf course to the housing estate- its not that obvious (see photo 7). Slight lack of arrows in the fields but since the path goes straight across the fields its fairly easy to negotiate.

A hilly but enjoyable route. Not that direct, but is forced into its choices by lack of crossings of the railway line. Safe, very offroad and wildlife rich (skylarks, buzzards and even a red kite). The path south of Rowney is well marked (fenced in) but was a little overgrown when I walked it. Steps and stiles, so not completely accessible.

Generally easy walking with pleasant views. Numerous solid, high stiles.

Café in The Square, Alvechurch at the start of the route.
Short stretch of road before a signposted left turn down a drive and up field paths over Newbourne Hill to Rowney Green. Short stretch of quiet road down to Lower Rowney Green with signpost to field paths.
(Use of a navigation App useful for this next section as far as the A441, Bordesley Bridge, an advantage.):
Sharp left turn, not signposted, after crossing the stream to walk parallel with the stream.
Turn right at signposted field path at path crossroads climbing up to Storrage Lane. Head almost due south across fields to Dagnell End Road, down the side of Abbey Park Hotel and housing estate to reach A441 at Bordesley Bridge.
Easy roadside walking up to Redditch station.
