Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A lot of this route is along St Swithun's Way, which is generally well-marked and therefore easy to follow. I did not have any access issues when I did this walk, and it was mostly quite level.

This is a level route, mainly along well-marked tracks and footpaths. It involves several stiles and parts of the route will probably get muddy after heavy rain. A section of the route follows St Swithun's way long distance footpath. The route is safe and accurately marked on the map. It is not accessible to wheelchairs and it would be a struggle with a buggy (need to lift the buggy over stiles and gates).

24 Apr 2021 Spring

I live locally and I took this route on Saturday 24th April 2021.
It was a nice sunny day and the ground was dry.
From the Slowways criteria:
1) The route is safe.
2) The route respect local codes and laws.
3) It is accessible in that it is not a strenuous walk though I know in wet weather parts can be a bit muddy. There are several stiles to cross.
4) I doubt there is a more direct walking route.
5) It is mostly off road or on road with pavement but there are a couple of short stretches of road without pavement.
6) There are resting places along the way. Alton and Bentley have places to eat and drink.
7) There are busses and trains at Alton and Bentley (busses from Froyle too).
8) The route is fairly clear but there are a couple of places where you could be led a little astray without GPS.
9) This is clearly not a great beauty spot but the walk is quite enjoyable and the scenery pleasant enough. It has to be said that the A31 is always in earshot.
10) Part of the route is on Saint Swithuns Way which runs from Farnham to Winchester.
