26 Jul 2023A mixed bag of a walk town and country so cattle and mud plus an on the level rail crossing and for those who consider it unsafe waterside walking. I enjoyed this walk, happy to take issues as they came.
Starting from Alsager where the North Staffordshire Railway spared no expense on the infrastructure providing an impressive house for the station master as was. We start along roads then a rather overgrown twitchell, not a recorded right of way, takes us down steps to a road crossing that needs care. Another narrow path soon leads to open fields, most stay close to the railway rather than the loop in the recorded path.
Crossing the busy and fast railway on the level also needs close attention with eyes and ears then we continue along a farm track. The path may appear to continue between farm buildings, but no, look out for the stile into the garden and 'keeping to the footpath' find a way to the canal side path.
At the road we cross the canal and return along the towpath which has a good surface and offers an easy and interesting walk into Kidsgrove where more steps appear to be the only access to the meeting place at the station.

04 May 2022The route leaves Alsager along residential roads, then crosses a main road and goes on through an alleyway. At the end of this the public footpath and this route cross to the south of the brook via a wooden bridge. I followed this although there was a well-trodden path continuing alongside the railway. When my path arrived back next to the railway, it was evident that it is possible to follow the well-trodden path because the brook goes through a culvert there.
After the level-crossing and the farm lane, I had to cross two cattle grids, between electric fencing, to the boat-garden path. The sign looks ambiguous here, but the garden is the correct path. It was nice to cross the bridge and get onto the real towpath for the rest of the route. The canal is very orange here, and there are several double locks and an interesting aqueduct. By the Canal Tavern pub, and Lidl it is necessary to cross to the other side of the canal (the OS Map is wrong to show a green diamond route from here to Kidsgrove Station). The route goes under the railway, then under the road bridge then up some steps to the station car park.
The route includes flights of steps and cycle barriers, cattle grids and a level crossing, so not wheel-friendly, but for me walking, it was a very good route.

20 Feb 2022This route starts along the pavement of the quiet residential streets of Alsager. As you get to the edge and have to cross Linney Lane you are faced with the only major road crossing of the walk, and although it requires care, I managed it easily enough. The path on the other side of the road takes you across along a footpath over a wooden bridge to the south side of a brook which you follow as far as a level crossing, where you cross the railway. Once on the other side the railway I was relieved to have walked through my last field of the day (the ground was sodden and it had started to sleet). The path takes you up a paved farm track and then through what appears to be a garden to the "other side" of the canal. The towpath is narrow on this side, but you don't have to walk far to get to the bridge which takes you over to the main towpath which will take you to Kidsgrove. The route from there is a friendly popular section of the Trent and Mersey Canal. You pass under the aqueduct which marks the border between Cheshire and Staffordshire, the North and the Midlands. The meeting place for Kidsgrove is outside the station but you pass a pub and a supermarket on the way. There is also a pub and supermarket at the Alsager end of the walk. This route is direct, safe and relaxing. Despite the thick snow that fell as I finished my review, I concluded that I'd really enjoyed this walk. Full marks.
