15 Feb 2023 (edited 16 Feb 2023)Walked from South Normanton to Alfreton. Full marks for directness, but an uninspiring and rather noisy roadside walk.
The route is simple and straightforward to follow. Leaving South Normanton, we go south along Market Street, then right along Alfreton Road. I used the pelican crossings to cross to the south side, and once the pavement ends with the last houses, I used the path on the south side that Ken mentions, which would be quite pleasant without the traffic noise. Where it ends by the entrance to Carnfield Hall, it is easiest to cross to the north side (which has a continuous but sometimes narrow pavement all the way). We pass the station approach, a good place to cross back to the south side of the road and continue along Mansfield Road, turning right onto High Street and left down Cressy Road and right along Hall Street to the meeting point at the bus station (some may prefer the pedestrianised routes down from High Street past the library to the bus station starting on Central Road or Chapel Street).

08 Mar 2022This is a functional route. It is as short as it can be and relatively safe. The path parallel to the road climbing from the station to South Normanton was pretty muddy on the day I walked it. The Alfsou1 route is longer and very wet in places.

05 Oct 2021Walked South Normanton to Alfreton this route appears to be all on sidewalks, yes I admit the Americans got that name spot on. It is as direct as can be and there is a bit of path away from the narrow pavement of Carnfield Hill. (Use the footway on the south side of the road at the 50 MPH sign take the track that runs just south of the road only divided from the traffic by a hedge. Seats suggest this is an official path). There is a minor road corner cut off where Market Street meets The Common and this route does offer a walk to Alfreton station which is hardly centrally located one mile from the town centre of that name. I reviewed Alfsou1 some time back and gave it only one star.
