This route is derived from Aledry one but avoids a diversion at Croftamie and follows the National cycle route 7 for the next couple of km towards Alexandria

After train delays getting to Alexandria, it was good that this was a very straightforward route with easy navigation and easy terrain for faster walking, although the tarmac was rather wearing on our feet. The start, and the area around the station, were nothing special, but we soon got into pleasant countryside with nice views across the fields, despite the on-and-off rain.
The roads were very quiet, but it was good to reach the old railway line cycle-track, even though it was still mostly tarmac. I could see from the map that the line of this old railway, from Alexandria to beyond Croftamie would make an excellent Slow Way covering 80% of the distance to Drymen, if a small amount of improvement work was applied to it.
A short way along the accessible section we crossed through Croftamie, where there was a café, open daily except Tuesday - the day we walked it. It is well beyond halfway though.
The highlight of the walk was the high footbridge over Endrick Water where you could look across the fields to Dalnair Castle, and down below to see the original railway bridge piers.
Drymen was a lovely old village with good facilities.

Review of route Alexandria - Drymen two (Aledry 2)
I walked this route with a companion on a showery day in June 2025. The route begins at Alexandria train station but quickly heads out of the town and is soon entering open farmland. Much of the route is along relatively quiet country roads. There are good views all along the way. However the road walking becomes quite monotonous, so the switch to a footpath/cyclepath near Croftamie is very welcome. All too soon, we are back on tarmac. However the traffic remains light and views become more varied as Conic Hill, Ben Lomond and Loch Lomond all come into view. The elevated footbridge over the Endrick Water is also a nice surprise. There is a busy road to cross just before a short section from the edge of Drymen into the village centre and the end of the route.
