Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Snailblakes

02 Aug 2022 Summer

We walked this route on 31 July 2022 from Lambourne to Aldbourne. The weather was dry but very muggy and warm.

We would not recommend the route because of a couple of minor problems and a major one.

Minor problem:
A couple of miles out of Lambourn the route follows a section of the Baydon road for a few hundred yards, this was quite busy with some heavy farm vehicles when we walked it so had to keep our wits about us. The exit from this road was a footpath through the hedgerow which we missed initially and had to retrace our steps to find it. It was very overgrown and the footpath sign was not easy to see coming from the Lambourn direction (see pictures 1 to 3). Passing through the gate behind the hedgerow you cross through a large open expanse of featureless gallops and there is no obvious footpath to follow, so we had to guess at the right general direction to walk.

Major problem: Lambourn and Aldbourne are bisected by the M4. Approaching the motorway embankment at the top of the hill the footpath turns left to run parallel and immediately beneath the embankment for a few hundred yards. This footpath had obviously not been used in a long time and was very overgrown with thick brambles and nettles (see pictures 4 & 5). We eventually forced our way through only to find that the supposed footpath to access the road bridge over the motorway just didn’t exist and we found ourselves stuck in a wasteland at the foot of the embankment which we had to scramble up to access the bridge over the M4 (see pictures). This accounts for our very low star rating for the walk

Minor problem:
On the Aldbourne side of the motorway, approaching Baydon House Farm, the Slow Ways route goes straight through the middle of the farm buildings, except that you can’t do this as it is fenced off so we had to navigate around the farm estate site, which wasn’t difficult.
