Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

29 Aug 2024 (edited 06 Sep 2024)Aldbourne to Lambourn 2 (Aldlam 2) review.
A Slow Way with excellent views over the rolling North Wessex Downs, with plenty of opportunities to see horses.
The route begins in the picturesque village of Aldbourne (Photo 1). There are bus links with Swindon, Marlborough and Hungerford, albeit with limited timetables.
I was caught out early at Baydon Hill Farm. At the stile, don’t be fooled by what appears to be the footpath on the right. Look to the left for an opening in the hedge, and the footpath heading east (on the right of Photo 2).
The path crosses gallops and ascends to the bridleway into Baydon (Photo 3).
If there is any doubt this is prime horse training territory, Baydon sets that right. The footpaths pass fields with horses, plenty of horseboxes, and the general aroma is unmistakable! (Photo 4). There’s a break point at the Fancy B Turkish restaurant & pub.
The road north out of Baydon crosses over the M4. The road lacked a pavement, but was pleasantly quiet (early afternoon). I was only passed by a couple of vehicles. The route then heads due east along a surprisingly fine lane, considering it only services Baydon Hole farm (Photo 5). There are great views over the rolling downs (Photo 6).
Beyond the farm, the Slow Way becomes a byway east into Lambourn (Photos 7 & 8). Nearing the village, this was churned up by hooves and there was some mud even in summer. This might not be so enjoyable in wetter seasons (Photo 9).
Lambourn is a major centre for racehorse training and has a choice of amenities.
