Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Jul 2024I attempted the route in August. I managed to make it as far as the Stracey Arms Mill before deciding the route was impassable. There were two stretches, one close to the beginning and one at Stracey Arms Mill, where the only way to progress was balancing on top of a 3 foot high wall with drops into brambles and stinging nettles on both sides. Most of the walk up to that point was through waist high, and at some points chest high, grass, stinging nettles and brambles. At the Mill we spoke to one of the owners who told as that the route used to be cut four times a year but that this no longer happened. We were also told that beyond the point we had reached the path would be no better. If walking from Acle to Great Yarmouth I would strongly recommend the Weavers Way route which is properly maintained. This was the route I returned to Acle on.

22 Jul 2024Route may be walkable in Winter, but in mid summer it is not and the wall parts are overgrown and dangerous.
Speaking to a local, they no longer maintain this section.
We managed the section from Acle to Stracey Arms Mill, very little of the walk was recognisable as a path or track. It was just walking through rough ground with 5 foot stinging nettles, brambles, long grass and reeds.
Sections were only passable on top of an old wall which was completely overgrown.

20 Nov 2022I walked this route from Acle to Great Yarmouth. I want to like it, and there's a lot about it that's great - it's beautiful in The Broads, and following the riverside path for 95% of this walk is straightforward and easy. Great Yarmouth is certainly an exciting place to end a walk, too.
That said, there are a few issues.
There was two, I believe, instances when the path jumps up and over a short wall, which was funny (see image 3, where the path goes from the right hand side of the small concrete wall to the left hand side, and you have to just climb over it).
There were several gates that either were locked or indeceipherable. I ended up climbing over probably 5 or 6 closed gates that I couldn't figure out. The route is definitely on actual footpaths, but the gates were really tricky!
Also, some of the footpath segments were overgrown. These two issues were especially bad in the segment of the route from just north of the New Road along the river, east along the river about half a mile or so.
The ground surface is a bit uneven, and it can be windy, which made it a tiring 10 miles! There's also no break points along the route, save for one shop at Stracey Arms Moorings. The very sparse shop wasn't really open when I walked during the day on Saturday in November, but the shop owner was very kind to come let me in. Be aware - the card minimum is £15!
Crossing the A47 isn't exactly pleasant, but I really didn't have to wait too long to find a gap to cross, so not too terrible. The very short stretch along the A47 was also fine, there's a generous verge on the north side of the road.
Likewise, crossing the two rail lines was fine.
The stretch south of the A47 heading into GY was by far the highlight of the route, a gorgeous segment along the water.
After passing the railway station, I didn't like that the route stuck to North Quay, a big busy road. The route should have gone east into town first instead of heading south on North Quay.
The route isn't terrible, but there's enough about it that's a bit challenging! And unless you want to divert south through Halvergate, this is probably the best option. Again, if you're agile, willing, and undeterred, you can get between Acle and Great Yarmouth following this line. I did it! It's just not entirely easy!.
