26 Jun 2024 (edited 27 Jun 2024)Abingdon to Berinsfield (Abiber 1) review.
The route leaves picturesque Abingdon over the Thames bridge and takes a footpath eastward (Photo 1). As an alternative, one can follow the riverbank. In either case, the Slow Way then follows the river. The Thames Path National Trail is on the north bank; and it’s great when stretches of the river have the option of paths on either side (Photo 2).
The route takes an uneven path alongside rail tracks (Photo 3), before crossing them to arrive at Culham Science Centre. No chance to see the cool stuff going on within, as we are sternly directed around the perimeter fence (Photo 4).
I was caught out walking Thame Lane towards Clifton Hampden (Photo 5). Watch out for the footpath sign pointing left [SU543961], as that’s the correct way. The lane did at least lead to a pub.
The final stretch into Berinsfield alongside A-roads isn’t too inspiring, but there’s a pavement.

26 Feb 2022Fairly easy to navigate, although it got quite confusing on the paths around the back of Culham Science Centre as signposting/tracks were not too clear (this could easily have been my poor navigation skills though!). The route is not accessible for buggies/wheelchairs due to a stile, steps, and uneven ground. The route crosses a railway line which you just walk straight across but was fine as the crossing point is clearly marked. The section running parallel to the railway line has a very short section of overgrown bramble which makes it slightly tricky. The final part of the route is on a path to the side of a road. There is a nice river stretch with wildlife to see and hear.

27 Jun 2024Even with your warning, I managed to get confused on the path after Culham. Brambles hid the way down to the rail crossing. I took the bridge further on. This is the actual Slow Way route, but I think the crossing route is more interesting and shorter.

05 Dec 2021Unusually for routes in this area, a significant amount of it is paved. The section between Burcot and Berinsfield is on pavement next to a road, but the section to the north of the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (marked Thame Lane on maps) is also solid. Having said that, the remaining sections are on pasture or farmland, and not recommended for wheels.
Sights - as well as the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (home of the largest temperatures in the solar system - see https://ccfe.ukaea.uk/research/joint-european-torus/ for details), the walk passes the Culham Motocross Park, and the location of the first pound lock on the Thames.
