29 Mar 2022From the centre of Abersychan, the path crosses the bridge over the River Lloyd and immediately heads up via steep paths into the woods, which can be very rugged and slippery under foot in places. Eventually, the path flattens out on the lanes at the top of the ridge and then heads through the golf course to come out on Folly Lane. It`s definitely worth the short detour to go and see the folly and also the views from there.
The path then follows the roman road and joins up with a lane that takes you into the village of Mamhilad. If time allows, the village pub is an excellent place to stop off for a break. The path then continues through the churchyard and on through farmland and many fields until it reaches the Mon & Brec canal at bridge 71. The signage is not that good in places through the farmland.
Then a nice long stretch along the canal with some great views across the Monmouthshire countryside. Another nice break point is the cafe at Goytre Wharf. The path leaves the canal at bridge 91 and heads downhill through the fields into Llanellen, where it follows the main road into Abergavenny. This is the A4042, the main road from Pontypool, and it can be quite busy and noisy on that last mile or so into town. A more peaceful alternative, although a couple of miles longer is to carry on along the canal path to Llanfoist at bridge 95A, turn right down the steps on to the lane, cross the main road at the bottom, follow the lane through the tunnel under the A465 Heads of the Valleys road, straight on up the footpath and turn right on to the lane that goes down past the cemetery to the main A4143 road into Abergavenny.
Overall, a lovely walk through the Torfaen Woodlands and Monmouthshire countryside.
