Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

28 Apr 2022Direction: Abersychan to Abertillery
This is a classic "over the mountain" valley to valley walk. The walk immediately starts on a stiff uphill walk up Union Street and even stiffer up the footpath leading onto the Promenade. It then levels out for a while along the cycle track and the Promenade, on through the Big Arch and on to The British, a former mining site, now being reclaimed by nature, and subject to local politics and funding may be transformed into a public green space.
The path then leads slowly up into the Sychan valley, a steady plod uphill following the upper side of a fence (Photo 1), but as the path deviates and goes up the hill side, there are lots of criss-crossing paths, so some care is needed to keep the heading. Then it`s a steep climb to reach the top of the ridge. Some good views looking back towards Talywain and Abersychan (Photo 2), although there is some scarring on the hillsides here and there from scrambling bikes. Up on top, the paths are not always obvious and may take a little time to find. Again some great views looking down towards Six Bells in the Ebbw Fach valley (Photo 3).
A steep descent then follows into the forest above Abertillery. The trees in some parts of the forest are diseased or fire damaged and looks a little eerie in places (Photo 4). The path then emerges on to the upper streets of Abertillery, with a steep descent into the town.
A really nice stiff walk, with a good variety of landscapes along the way. The paths are usually obvious, except on top of the mountain and the last stretch of the way up the Sychan Valley.
