Description
This route follows the most direct, walkable route between Aberfeldy and Dunkeld. It is signposted, except that it diverts from the signposted route to take a short cut on rougher, muddier paths north of Loch Kennard. The paths near the Hermitage are also rough, with tree roots

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

30 Sep 2024I explored this route in Summer 2023, but omitted to submit my review.
This is a good route, mainly on forest and windfarm tracks, but it would be unsuitable for wheelers due to occasional rough ground and a narrow gate opening. There is nowhere en route for sustenance. Views are wide ranging, and I found the walk much pleasanter than I had expected, as it avoids most of the forestry and wind turbines. Dunkeld and Aberfeldy are both served by the same bus service. I deducted a star because of the lack of a rest spot en route, boggy ground on the 'short cut' north of Lock Kennard, the narrow gate opening, and the rough paths near the Hermitage.
From Aberfeldy a footway heads eastwards beside the A827, but a trodden path beside the river can be taken as a pleasant alternative. The footway ends shortly before the route heads south east up a track signposted 'Griffin Forest Paths, Dunkeld 15', but there is a trodden path on the grass verge. North of Loch Kennard the route takes to a path signed as 'Dead End' (from both ends), but is perfectly feasible, although there is a small stream crossing, and the route might be boggy during winter months. The alternative forest track is further, well surfaced, but harder on the feet.
Just to the east of Loch Kennard the route heads uphill. There was a fallen tree over the track in 2023, but this may have been removed by now. It was easily bypassed.
This route takes a track just to the west of the main Griffin Windfarm area. There are two almost parallel tracks, but this one is easier on the feet and avoids passing the turbines too closely. At its eastern end it is unclear which track to use ('PATH') has been scratched on one SSE sign, this is the route to take!
Further on an old sheepfold provides interest, and there is a short stretch through the forest. Heading downhill towards Ballinlick the route exits the forest through a pedestrian gate with a big stone nearby which would not be easy for wheelers.
Down at the road the path is signposted 'Path to Aberfeldy 13'; this road is very quiet and leads to Rumbling Bridge where the Dunkeld Path Network is gained. From here there are various paths leading to the Hermitage car park, the Slowways route takes the closest path to the river, passing Ossian's Hall, and is very pleasant. The signed path network is followed on a direct route into Dunkeld.
All in all, an excellent route, but passing through remote terrain.
