Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

02 Jan 2023Walked Cwmbran to Abercarn direction.
The walk starts off in a urban area before gradually heading into the countryside and then alongside a farm and few houses you start to head up into the hills (photo 1 and 2).
The route up into the ridge line is easy enough to follow and enjoy the views all around you as there are some spectacular ones to enjoy. Lots of walkers and bikes around this area enjoying the hills and views!
I was tempted to head to Twmbarlwm here, instead vee right and follow the path down into the trees, easily marked all the way. Then your following a well marked path for walkers that meanders and crosses the single traffic road here all the way down to the visitors centre. Nice spot to grab a drink and use the restroom if needed. This part could probably use a tweek with the data point, as it's easy to head off down a wrong path as there are a lot of them in the forestry area.
This probably would have been a 5 star for me as it had everything; hill views, woodland, torrenting water and amenities; just that final road section to Abercarn that is pretty noisy that lets it down.

22 Sep 2022September 2022. Direction: Abercarn to Cwmbran.
Agree entirely with Maddy T`s review. Fairly straight forward, but I did miss the footpath from the scenic drive through the forestry and ended up walking up the one way road system (only one car passed me, so not at all busy). On reaching the top from car park 2 and coming out on to the common, the planned footpath was clearly signed and a clear path was there heading down, so it looks like I didn`t go far enough to find the start of it.
The best part of the walk for me was from the top of the ridge down to the start of the suburbs of Cwmbran.

03 Jan 2022This is a good up-and-over route that passes close to the summit of Twmbarlwm (419m). The Forest Drive section is a popular mountain-biking area with a myriad of paths and tracks; I found the footpath down the hill easily though.
The only downside to this route is the sprawling layout of Cwmbran - it takes a while to get out of it.
