Description

This route follows the main Taff Trail between Abercynon and Cilfynydd - slightly longer but more pleasant than the narrow pavement alongside the A4054. The footpath between Cilfynydd and Penheol Ely Road is mostly clearly marked, and the long stretch along Eglwysilan Road is fine - not much traffic and great views. The footpath section across Mynydd Meio is not particularly clear or well-marked, but the terrain was easy and I kept my bearings with my OS map using pylons, etc. for orientation - not recommended in poor visibility!
At Ty Canol Farm, I couldn't find a path to the side of the buildings (as shown on the OS map) but used the road through the property

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Walked from Caerphilly to Abercynon. Lovely walk with great views from the high points. Pretty easy to follow, although judging by all the dead bracken around, it might be more difficult earlier in the year. The only awkward section, as others have said, is the boggy bit on Mynydd Meio. I did have to make a small diversion, but nothing too out of the way.

August 2023. Direction: Abercynon to Caerphilly.

A great walk, with a variety of landscapes and some stunning views along the way. Mostly easy to navigate, except for the section across Mynydd Meio, where I had to take a lengthy detour to avoid crossing the Nant Ffynnon Wen stream and surrounding bog, as it was too wide and deep. It was a struggle to get back to the path as there were some sections of deep bracken, although some patches had been recently cleared.

The first section along the Taff Trail is easy going along the flat. The next part is a test for the lungs - the long haul up through Cilfynydd village, on up the mountain through the fields and then the first part of the Eglwysilan mountain road. Worth the effort, as the views are stunning - across the valleys and down to Penarth, Steepholm, the Bristol Channel and beyond. The Rose & Crown at Eglwysilan would have been a great stopping off point, but it was shut (looked permanently closed), so I had to wait until I reached The Angel on the outskirts of Caerphilly.
